My husband plays endless hours of online games like Guild Wars, etc. Does this open my computer to others? Can his gaming friends or other players obtain access to my system this way. I don’t necessarily trust that it is a secure way to play. How to I tell if my computer is safe?

No matter what games he plays, or even if he just searches the web, your computer will always be open to attacks and other things, but it has gotten alot harder for people to do so because of the different isp provider security, and firewalls out there.
So as far as to your question, if you have a firewall and you are careful you are ok, Most attacks or viruses/spyware are done by downloading stuff.
But just remember if it is to good to be true then there is probable some thing wrong with it.

use a firewall, that only allows access to the game. when you do this its telling your router to open the ports which are required to connect to that games server. unless his friends are actually have direct acces to the servers there is no way they can get information off your computer. even the companies who own the servers cant get access to your computer. hope this helps, x

Even if u use firewall the computer will be open to hackers so ii recommend u to :
1) Have a good ant-spywares
2) Change ur game password eventually

If you have a good firewall you should be okay. I use Zone Alarm free and have no problems with any rogue packets entering my pc for over ten years. And none of my personal data leaves my pc.
Gaming, can usually have trojans. Not all of them, but some do and you must really have a good antivirus in your system to protect you. A good free one is Avast with a background scanner.
Plus I use a free download software that will test your firewall for leaks. Will tell you if your firewall is secure. You can download from this site. The owner was a former executive with Microsoft.
Download and save, this way you can run a daily test if you wish. Follow the instructions for the leak test to be performed. I check daily for leaks and never any leaks as Zone Alarm free is leak proof.
Plus you can install an excellent free antispyware program I use that will find what all other miss in spyware.
Superantispyware. This spyware program will find what all other miss.
Usually when you are doing online gaming, you will receive alot of spyware or ads. (Being they have your IP address). I play free slots and I don’t get one piece of adware of any kind that is found with Superantispyware. My firewall block all of these rogue packets.
